Good Run Comes To An Abrupt Halt

Posted By Luke Garner Monday, 7th February 2011 12:49pm

Paul Thompson saw his side succumb to two narrow defeats against Sheffield, but they did pick up a valuable point in the race for fourth spot.

His bruised and battered side made the best of their talents in the 'House of Steel' on Saturday night and held a 2-1 lead with just 50 seconds remaining. However, former Coventry star Derek Campbell, who was key in the successful Championship roster last campaign, levelled the tie. Neither outfit could find a breakthrough in overtime as Brett Jaeger kept the visitors in the hunt with some sparkling saves, but it was Ben Simon's charges who took the win on penalty shots.

After seeing their winning streak of four games broken there was more optimism as Sheffield arrived in the Midlands, but it was to be a false dawn for the suffering home fans.

Despite the visitors having played four games in a week by the time they arrived in the Skydome, the Blaze were unable to go one better and fell 4-1 to the title-chasers.

The weekend's results leave the Blaze entrenched in 5th spot, nine points behind Nottingham Panthers in 4th and two points ahead of 6th placed braehead, albeit with three games in hand on both.

"Their goalie Ervins Mustukovs has not got 10 shut-outs this season for no reason and he made some big, big saves," said Thompson. "We lacked concentration for their two quick goals and that killed us. But they have so much offensive threat. But we can’t get too down. We came within a minute of beating them last night and we have just played the top team back-to-back."
