UK City of Culture Bid
Steve Orchard, Touch FM CEO is backing the bid.
Coventry is bidding to be UK City of Culture in 2021. It’s time for our city to take centre stage and show the world all that Coventry has to offer. The bid is being run by Coventry City of Culture Trust, an independent charity that has been set up to manage the process and take the city on this exciting journey.
This is a competition and we need you if we’re going to win. Coventry has been moving people by cycle, car and peace for centuries and now we will move people through Culture.
Well why not, that’s what we say! We know that we’re not perfect, we have a long way to go but winning City of Culture is exactly what Coventry needs to unite the city and work together towards something spectacular.
Coventry has a history of triumphing against adversity, of coming together with a fierce but quiet pride. We love our city and all too often have listened to others putting it down but now is the time to invite the world to venture past our beloved ring road and into a city with a story to tell and experiences to share.
We weren’t sent to Coventry; we chose to come. Coventry is a city of welcome, a city of peace and reconciliation, a city of innovation and invention, a City of Culture.
What is the City of Culture?
City of Culture is a competition run by the Department of Culture Media and Sport every four years. Previous winners are Derry/Londonderry in 2013 and Hull who have their year in 2017.
We expect that initial bids will be submitted in spring 2017 with four shortlisted cities being taken forward to a final round in Autumn 2017 with the winner announced at the end of the year.
The winning city will then spend the following years preparing to host one of the largest events in the UK calendar as the world watches. As to what you can expect in 2021, that’s where you come in.
